Wells Fargo
In August of 2018, Wells Fargo agreed to a settlement with the DOJ requiring the bank to pay $2.09 billion for its role in the fraudulent origination and sale of subprime residential mortgage loans, which led to billions of dollars in losses among investors.
The agreement revealed that Wells Fargo actually conducted repeated internal testing showing that over half of the loans in question had flaws for which there was no plausible explanation, yet the bank withheld that information from investors and the public.
